Academy Training, Subsequent Assignments and Advancement

Basic Training:

The police academy is conducted at the Arlington Police Academy. Curriculum consists of approximately 26 weeks of instruction, which includes, but is not limited to, criminal law procedures, patrol and investigative techniques, firearms, self-defense, local ordinances, departmental policies and procedures, and report writing. Generally, classes are based on a 5-day week, 8-hour day.

Subsequent Assignment:

Following the classroom training, new officers will be assigned further training with a Field Training Officer (FTO). During this 14 week period, the new officer will begin as an observer and gradually will assume full responsibility for each police function as the field training continues.

Advancement, Specialization and Department Philosophy:

Promotions are received on the basis of established, competitive examination. Newly hired police officers will be assigned to the patrol division for a minimum of 2 years before being eligible for other assignments. Interested officers may wish to expand the range of experience by transferring into other fields available to them such as:

  • Detectives
  • Traffic Enforcement
  • Community Affairs
  • Training
  • Tactical Team
  • Gangs
  • And Many Others

The Arlington Police Department employs a philosophy known as Community Based Policing. Community Based Policing is a proactive, decentralized approach to reduce crime, disorder and fear of crime by intensely involving the same officer in the same community on a long term basis. Officers are trained in problem solving as it relates to the circumstances they encounter. This style of policing provides officers with a range of solutions to citizens' problems when they are encountered and encourages officers to find the underlying conditions that lead to the problems that caused the incident. Community Based Policing allows officers to be more flexible in responding to problems, thus providing better service to the citizens and more job satisfaction for the officer. This style of policing is a more effective way to deal with the communities that they police. Accountability, responsibility and a sense of obligation are the key goals of Community Based Policing and the Arlington Police Department is committed to this objective. New officers should expect more job satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment when dealing with citizen problems.
