General Requirements

 

You must be a citizen of the United States, 21 years of age or older.

Possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university,

Education is not waived for prior military service or prior police experience.

Possess 20/20 vision, either corrected or uncorrected in each eye. Uncorrected vision cannot exceed 20/100 in each eye, unless vision is corrected by the use of contact lenses which must be worn on duty and/or during all enforcement related activities. Must be free of dichromatic color blindness, night blindness, and any other visual deficiencies or limitations.

Possess hearing with less than a 30 decibel loss, either corrected or uncorrected in each ear. Uncorrected hearing cannot exceed a 60 decibel loss in each ear;

                           No Felony or Class A Misdemeanor convictions.      

No misdemeanor convictions above the grade of class C within the last 10 years;

No DWI convictions within the last 10 years;

Not on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of class C misdemeanor;

Be of good character and have a stable school/work/driving record;

No family members working for APD;

No pending litigation-criminal or civil (including divorce).

Officers and uniformed police department personnel must conceal any tattoo(s) by use of the authorized uniform or city-authorized clothing.

 

 
Health
A.  Among the conditions to be evaluated as a prerequisite to preliminary consideration are:
 
 
  • A general capacity to perform tasks required of peace officers, including (but not limited to) capability of unassisted (except be mechanical or stationary self-contained objects) performance of physical agility tasks reflective of peace officer duties.
  • These will include capacity to run, jump, turn, pivot, stoop, climb, and execute similar movements; push, lift, remove, install, and otherwise handle objects and persons weighing 50-200 pounds, and subdue resisting individuals by exercise of physical force so as to take into custody and transport them against their will.
  • Such tasks shall be capable of being performed with reasonable accommodation, if necessary, that does not impair a business hardship and without presenting a direct threat to the safety of the applicant or others.
   
B. Among the conditions to be evaluated as a prerequisite to a final job offer are:
 
 
  • The applicant must have vision in both eyes and possess hearing in both ears as described above under general requirements.
  • Capable of performing the tasks described in A
  • Possess satisfactory psychological and emotional health; and
  • Not possess a condition which posses a direct threat to the safety of the applicant or others.
